７３日目 Singapore 〜 Hong Kong

１２月５日（土）曇り

ホテルからタクシーでChangi空港へ向かう。運転手はおしゃべりで親切。シンガポールの色んな話をしてくれる。荷物を預けてからも時間があるので空港内を散策。地下鉄駅で EZ Link Card の保証金を返金してもらい、新しい第３ターミナルを歩いて回る。入管はあまり厳しくない。中の免税店などを過ぎて搭乗口の手前で手荷物検査があるのは珍しい。Aliの席が故障により使えないらしく、あいにく満席のため別々に座る。３時間少々のフライトの割には大型のジャンボ機である。真ん中の真ん中に位置する席のため外の景色は見えなかったが、読書をしているとあまり長くは感じなかった。

無事にHong Kong国際空港に到着。タクシーでホテルへと向かう。ホテルは九龍半島のTsim Sha Tsui（尖沙咀）に位置する。繁華街のすぐ近くだが、大きな有名ホテルではないためかベテラン運転手も場所を知らず、地図で確認しなければならなかった。この運転手は今朝のシンガポール人とは対照的に寡黙なおっちゃんだが、運転が荒くかなりの飛ばし屋である。狂ったように車線を変えながら車をどんどんと追い越して行く。いつぶつかっても不思議ではないような運転であった。空港から距離はかなりあるがそれほど時間はかからず、何とか無事にホテルへ到着。

メインストリートのNathan Roadまですぐ近くなので夕食場所を求めて繁華街を歩いてゆく。レストランが建ち並ぶ所からビルに入って３階にある波羅密多素食(Paramita Vegetalian restaurant)というレストランで自然食と謳っているのにつられてやって来たが、エビの野菜あんかけ、豆腐の揚げ物、福建風炒飯といずれも美味しかった。デザートに杏仁スープを食べてお腹いっぱいになる。名前の通り般若心経にある仏教の波羅密多をモチーフにしているようで、店の内外には看板としてお寺の前の小僧さんたちを描いた絵を掲げ、店内には向こう側の壁に般若心経の額が掛けられているようだった。

ビルを出た通り沿いにも中華、日本、韓国のレストランのみならずアイリッシュパブなど色んなお店が並び、看板のネオンが賑やかである。湾に向かって歩いて行くが通行止めで警察がたくさん出ている。空港について初めて知ったのだが、今日はEast Asian Games の開会日らしい。すぐ近くにある埠頭そばの会場で、間もなく開会式が行われるらしい。ただでさえ賑やかなのが警備の警察官と観光客で身動きが取れないほど人通りが多い。

湾とは反対側にNathan RD.を歩いて行くと色んな店の客引きが声をかけている。自分の知らぬ前にAliが客引きのひとりと会話を交わしたらしい。その男が後から追いかけて来てちょっと寄ってみたらどうですか？と必死に引き止めている。全く興味がなければ素通りするが、その店は Custom Tailor なので行ってみることに。以前よりLorraine（Aliの妹）からHong Kongの Custom made suits はいいものを安くあつらえることができるという話をよく聞いていたので、Aliは特に興味をもっていたのだ。自分は特別買おうというつもりはなくAliに付き添う形で行ったのだが、色々な生地や模様を見ていると終いには寸法を測られていた。Typical! モノは確かに良いのに加え、上から下まで自分の寸法に合わせて作る所がいい。Ready-to-wear （prêt-à-porter）では一番近いサイズを選んでもメーカーにより多少長かったり短かったり、太かったり細かったりとぴったり合う服を見つけるのは難かしいので。Aliはブラウス、シャツ、コートのセット、自分も同様にスーツ等を仕立てることに。予想外の大出費だが、上等な生地に加えフィットする服が着られることを考えると悪い買い物ではないとは思う。同じ素材のブランド品に比べると間違いなく買い得と言えるだろう。

結局２時間近くCustom Tailorで生地の選択、採寸を済ませ明後日フィッティングのために戻ることを約してホテルに帰る。店から徒歩３分とすぐ近くだ。人混みの波は衰えることなく、むしろ夕方よりも増えている感じさえする。不夜城の香港の街である。

Day 73 – Singapore / Hong Kong

We got up early this morning and packed our suitcases ready for our flight to Hong Kong. We caught a taxi to Changi International Airport, and were given another guided tour by the driver on the way!  We arrived in plenty of time, and even had time to get the refunds on our tourist passes. After checking in our suitcases we took a little detour to the recently built Terminal 3 – a very fancy new terminal, a bit like Heathrow T5, with a 5 story high and 300m wide ‘Green Wall’ made up of various climbing plants and four waterfalls!!

Our flight was on time, although my seat apparently had ‘technical issues’ (whatever that means!) and so I was moved about 10 rows back from Seio.

It was quite a short flight – about 3 hours, but because it was a popular route, the planes was a huge Boeing 777-300, complete with entertainment system. I had an interesting meal…some kind of vegetarian oriental dish made up of tofu skiing or yuba?? Not really sure what I was eating, but it tasted quite nice. I also tried some durian fruit – very strange flavor, it tastes fruity yet smells of cheese!! Apparently you either love it or hate it – I’m afraid the jury’s out for me on that one!!

We arrived safely in Hong Kong at about 3pm, and were planning to get the shuttle bus into the city before we found out that today was the opening ceremony for the East Asia games 2009 and the roads were closed to buses around our hotel!! In the end we got a taxi – another F1 wannabe…I had to close my eyes a couple of times as we hammered along the motorway weaving in and out of the various lanes!

Our hotel is in the heart of the entertainment and restaurant district, just around the corner from Nathan Road.

After unpacking and taking a little rest, we headed into town to get something to eat. We ended up at a Vegetarian restaurant called Paramita, and had sweet and sour prawns, deep fired tofu with mushroom and carrot, and Fukin (Foo-kin!) style fried rice. It was all very nice – although some of the items on the menu, like vegetarian pork and stir-fried beef didn’t sound like your usual vegetarian fare (^^)> Seio finished off with an almond and soya milk dessert, and I helped him with that a little bit!

Food is quite reasonable here even at a more formal restaurant. I have been very naughty with food during our trip, and have at times suffered for that, but it has been worth it just to try all these different delicacies.

Later on we took a walk along Nathan Road and looked around the different shops – everything from expensive gold jewellery to fake Rolexes!

We were accosted by a custom tailor, and ended up being taken to his shop where he proceeded to show us some lovely linens and suit materials. My sister had some custom clothes made when a HK tailor came to London, and I was very interested in getting some clothes made while in Hong Kong. 2 hours later we had been measured and fitted for blouses, suits and trousers…we have a fitting on Monday afternoon! Everything moves so fast over here – blink and you have bought something!!

We got back to the hotel around 11pm and went straight to bed….tomorrow we will do some more sightseeing and some more eating (^^)v

７２日目 Singapore Botanic Gardens / Merlion

１２月４日（金）曇りのち雨

昨日も遅くなったので朝はのんびり。まずは昨晩訪れたOrchard駅へとやってくる。目的の Botanic Garden に行く前にモールの地下にあるフードコートに寄ってみる。中華を中心に日本のたこ焼きや鉄板焼き、お菓子の店など種類が豊富。１１時過ぎとお昼にはちと早いが、小腹が空いたので軽く何かを食べることに。特にこれがというものはなく、中華料理のお店が建ち並ぶ中にある３種類のメニューだけが書かれた所で立ち止まる。店の前に展示している数種類の麺の一つをAliが店員に尋ねるとどうやら（確実ではないが）ビーフンのよう。豚肉を使ったスープ料理が３種類で、手軽に食べられそうなので注文してみる。Aliは麺入りの品を、自分は肉ギョーザの入ったスープを頼む。席に座って早速食べてみるが味は．．．。スープの油がギトギトとしていることに加え、匂いと舌触り、味など全て良くない意味で予想を裏切られる。Aliの頼んだ品も豚肉の味も然り、麺にしても酢の酸味に漢方の薬が混じったような微妙な味がして、慣れないせいか我々の味覚にはあわなかった。福岡出身の自分は豚骨ラーメンなんか好きなんだけど。豚を使ったスープでも味は全然違うんだ、とがっかりしながらその場を後にする。Aliはほとんど手をつけていなかったので何か他のもの探し歩いて回り、大豆シェイクの看板を発見して注文。その場でシェイクを作る姿を眺めると、アイスクリームをたっぷりと入れている。豆乳を使ったとしてもアイスを入れれば普通のミルクじゃん。どこがsoya drink?とAliは再びがっくり。自分が1.5杯以上担当し、冷房と相まって全身冷えに冷えた所で、ちょっと傷心気味にモールを後にする。

気を取り直し、バスを利用して予定のBotanic Gardenへとやって来る。巨大な公園内にはトロピカルな木や花が植えられて、きれいに整備されている。池や庭など散策して回るとだんだんと雲行きが怪しくなる。昨日と同じパターンだ。園内にあるOrchid Garden（蘭の庭）は有料だが種々の蘭が咲き乱れて美しい。一部工事中ではあるが、敷地は広くゆっくりと鑑賞して回ると結構時間がかかる。坂の上の方にある蘭の名前にはこの庭園を訪れた国賓の名を冠しているのがわかる。ネルソン・マンデラの花はくすんだような黄色で大してきれいではないが、アジアや中東各国の王や首相などの名前（ほとんど知らないけど）が並んでいる。その中に混じり、１９９３年の成婚を祝して名付けられたという純白の Princess Masako （雅子皇太子妃殿下）は、ひときわ美しかった。

色とりどりの蘭が咲き乱れるハウスにやって来た所で雨がザーザーと強くなる。昨日の教訓を生かしてホテルから傘を借りて来たので幾分ましではある。激しい雨も昨日ほどは長く続かず、Orchid Gardenを見回った所で公園内を通り抜け、公園を後にする。

バスと地下鉄を使い Little India へと行く。その名の通りインドの香り漂うこの地域ではsari（サリー）を纏ったインド系住民を多く目にする。Little India Arcadeをぶらぶらと歩いた後は地下鉄をもう一駅先に進み、Mustafa Centreを訪れる。ここもインド系住民が多い地域で、このセンターは日用品から土産物まで幅広く取り扱う何でも屋さんという感じ。陳列棚の間が狭いが客は多く、体を横にしてすれ違うような込み具合である。店内をぐるっと回った所でお店を後にする。

今日も一旦ホテルに帰り、着替えを済ませさっぱりとした所で昨日と同じ待ち合わせ場所に向かう。何度も通り過ぎたチャイナタウンの道筋にも詳しくなった。薄着にサンダル履きで、だるそうに一日中同じ場所に座るおじさんやおばさんの姿を何度も目にする。一歩も動かぬその姿は銅像のようである。

時間ギリギリになってしまいちょうどやって来た地下鉄電車に飛び乗ると逆方向に進む。Typical! 金曜夕方ということもあるのか人が多く地下鉄は混雑。約束から１０分ほど遅れてしまう。Wai Honごめん！

早速移動して昨日訪れたRaffles Hotelの一角にある Long Barへやって来る。床にピーナッツの殻が散乱しているのが面白い。遠慮なく殻を床に落としながらピーナッツを食べ、有名なカクテル Singapore Slingをいただく。ジンにチェリーブランデー、パイナップルジュースなど色々と混じったカクテルは甘くて飲みやすいがかなり強い。甘さにつられてぐいぐいと飲めるが、一気に飲むと顔がカクテルと同じ赤になってしまう。しばらく雰囲気を味わった後、昨日と同じくブランド店が並ぶホテル内を通り過ぎてすぐ近くの中華料理店へ。昨日のお店よりフォーマルな感じの円テーブルに中華装飾を施したお店である。薄切りのチキンにショウガとキュウリをレタスで巻いたものや、白身魚など美味しくいただく。sweet potatoes leaves （サツマイモの葉っぱ）は見かけも味もほうれん草に似ており、美味である。揚げ出し豆腐も美味しく、お昼の失敗を取り返すかのようにたくさん食べ、お腹いっぱいに。自分たちが食べ終わる頃にWai Honの友人、Bengが合流する。食事を終えた所で港の方向へ歩いて行く。Esplanade と呼ばれる文化複合施設は各種コンサートに使われる。今晩もちょうどコンサートが終わったらしく、客が大量に降りてくる。トゲトゲのアルマジロのようなこの建物は、その外観からドリアンと地元民に呼ばれているらしい。湾に面した野外のステージ周辺はピンクのライトの色が煌煌と輝き、聴衆が腰を降ろしてジャズの演奏を楽しんでいる。湾に沿って歩いてゆき、橋を渡ると観光名物の Merlion Parkが広がる。巨大なマーライオンの口からは勢い良く水が飛び出し、手前には小型のミニマーライオンが背中合わせに反対側を向いている。Merlionは現地ではマーライオンというより「マライオン」と言う風に発音され、以前は橋の向こう側にあったらしい。再開発により湾岸の陸地が延びたことからMerlionも移動し、方向も変わったそうだ。ここからは対岸のエスプラネードや London Eye にそっくりの Singapore Flyerと呼ばれる巨大観覧車もきれいに眺められる。付近では高層ビルが数多く建設中。なかでもMerlionの正面に建設中のカジノビルは３基が完成間近で、その周囲の建物も続くように建設中でまだまだ開発が続く様子。来年訪れればまた景色が変わっているに違いない。ベイエリアは新しい建物が多くお洒落。多くの若者で賑わっている。同じ賑わいでも自分たちの滞在中のチャイナタウンが雑然として中華や漢方の香りが漂い、お年寄りやおっちゃんおばちゃんが多いのとは対照的である。

市役所や国会議事堂、裁判所などの公官庁街を通り過ぎて駐車場まで歩く。車で来ていたBengがホテルまで送ってくれる。因みにこのHotel Re!の場所は昔、Wai Honの通った小学校があったそうで、懐かしい場所らしい。

どこの街へ行ってもガイドブック片手に回る場所は限られているので、地元住民の案内に勝るものはない。２日連続で案内をしてくれたWai Honと、車で送ってくれたBengに感謝。どうもありがとう！

Wherever you go, nothing is better than walking around with native people. Thanks for your advice and walking guide gourmet tour, Wai Hon! Also thank you for taking us to the hotel, Beng! We will come back to Singapore one day!

Day 72 – Singapore

As we had had a late night yesterday, we took our time getting ready and left the hotel late morning. We went to orchard station first of all and decided to grab something to eat before heading off to the Singapore Botanical Gardens – We ended up in the food hall of the Ion Mall, looking at all the different foods on offer. We came across what looked like a pork dumpling and noodle shop and decided to go for that as you could choose which noodles you wanted….unfortunately it didn’t taste or look like what we were expecting – we think it may have had some chinese herbal medicine in it, because it had rather a strange tang to it!! We both ate as much as we could, but neither of us could finish our meals. We were left feeling a little hungry and with a strange aftertaste in our mouths, so when we discovered a soya milkshake shop, we jumped at the chance to cleanse our palates! As you know, I can’t have dairy but soya milk was fine and so this looked quite safe. We watched as the guy put the soya milk base in the glass….and then our faces dropped as he added two scoops of chocolate (Seio) and strawberry (me) dairy ice-cream to the mix!! Oh dear (^^)> I drank most of my shake, but ended up with a bit of a sore head for the rest of the day!! Never mind….

After we’d recovered a little from the food and milkshake events of the morning, we jumped on the bus to the Botanic Gardens and took a nice long walk through the park. It was a lovely place, full of rare and interesting plants and flowers – with a special orchid garden as the main attraction. Unfortunately it started to pour with rain again in the early afternoon, but that don’t stop us taking lots of photos. Luckily we had an umbrella with us today, so we didn’t get as soaked as yesterday!

On the way home from the botanic gardens, we stopped off at Little India and had a walk around the shops in the Little India Arcade. There were henna tattoo salons, sari material shops and various market stalls selling little trinkets. We also went to the Mustafa Centre – a huge mall selling everything from watches and cameras to spices and sari material.

We didn’t buy anything, but it was nice to have a look around and see what was on offer.

It was getting a bit late and so we headed back to the hotel through Chinatown.

It was another quick turnaround to get dressed, and get back into town to meet up with Wai Hon. We met up at the same place as yesterday – City Hall station.

From there we went for a Singapore Sling cocktail at the famous Raffles Hotel Long bar – the only place in Singapore where it is Ok to throw litter on the floor – in this case peanuts!!

Singapore Sling originated at the Raffles Hotel Long Bar and to this day they still use the original recipe – mainly dry Gin, cherry Brandy and pineapple juice. It was very fruity and very easy to drink – quite dangerous on an empty stomach…luckily we had lots of peanuts to pace ourselves with.

After our cocktails, Wai Hon took us to a traditional Chinese restaurant where we tried some more authentic cuisine. Tonight we had sweet potato leaves, Sam Sui Chicken with ginger, and fish with ginger and spring onion. We all had some rice and lots of Chinese tea as well. Towards the end of the evening Wai Hon’s friend Beng (nickname ‘Ben-gu’) joined us and we all went off to see some more of Singapore at night. The boys took us to through the Esplanade concert hall, locally known as the Durian (as in the pungent fruit), and down to Marina Bay – home of the Singapore Flyer and Merlion. Singapore Flyer is a like for like copy of the London Eye really – giant pods that rotate on a half-hourly basis, giving you a grand view of the city. The Merlion was spouting tonnes of water into the Bay and looked very majestic. Wai Hon and Bengu pointed out some of the different buildings to us including the Fullerton Hotel, a gorgeous colonial building which was originally the general post office apparently!

After I’d taken lots of photos of Singapore at night, we all headed back towards Bengu’s car, passing City Hall, the statue of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Victoria Theatre, and the Supreme Court ‘flying saucer’ building on the way. Bengu kindly drove us back to the Hotel Re! where we said our good byes and promised to meet up again someday soon.

We were quite exhausted again and just fell in to bed and went to sleep – we will do our packing tomorrow morning as there is not too much of a rush for our next flight.

Thanks Wai Hon and Beng for showing us the real Singapore – good food, amazing sights and brilliant company (^^)v We will be back someday – and maybe they will have moved Merlion yet again, who knows?

７１日目 Singapore / Jurong Bird Park

１２月３日（木）曇りのち雨　Singapore

移動の疲れもあり朝は遅めに活動開始。チャイナタウンの中華料理店の連なるフードコートの裏道を通って地下鉄へ向かう。匂いが結構きつい。

２日間パスを買うために Harbour Front駅へと向かう。地下鉄の発券機で年配のスコットランド人夫婦が券の買い方をAliに尋ねてくる。クルーズ中で１日のみのシンガポールの自由行動らしい。港には大型船が停泊中。因みにここは大型ショッピングモールとつながっており、若者を多く見かける。昼食をとった後、電車とバスを乗り継いで目的地のJurong bird parkへと向かう。鳥専門の動物園で、園内には珍しい鳥が散らばっている。

はじめから曇り空ではあったが、園内を半分以上回った所でぽつぽつと雨が降り出し、次第に雨脚が強くなる。ペリカンと白鳥の池の間にある屋根付きの避難所（観察所）で雨がやむのを待つ。併し雨はやむどころか激しさを増し、ついには雷が轟音を轟かせる。雷も遠くからすぐ近くまで何度も落ちて、雨は緩む気配を見せない。３０分以上待った所で一組、また一組と濡れるのを覚悟で進み出す。結局１時間近く雨の中の魚と鳥を観察した所で我々も移動することに。出口に向かって早足で進むが、案の定ずぶ濡れに。

バスと電車を経由してホテルへと帰り着く頃には雨も止み、蒸し暑さが戻って来る。濡れた服を着替え、シャワーを浴びてさっぱりした所で地下鉄のCity Hall駅へと向かう。少し予定に遅れるも無事にWai Hon と１０年ぶりの再会。Wai Honは約１０年前、関西方面を旅した際に旅先で知り合ったシンガポール人である。一緒に広島を観光した思い出がある。その後は数年に一度メールを交わす程度だったが、今回シンガポールを訪れる旨を知らせると、是非会おうということに。到着前からもメールで見所などを教えてくれ、今日は仕事後にもかかわらず待ち合わせてくれた次第だ。久しぶりの再会とはいうもののほとんど変わっていない。挨拶する間もなく早速Swissotelの７０階にある見晴らしのいいバーに連れて行ってくれる。雨もやんで夕日が沈むシンガポールの街並を見渡せる素晴らしい景色だ。カクテルを飲む間に陽も暮れ、ネオン輝く夜景も見渡せる。

その後は Raffles Hotel へと向かう。シンガポールでの最高級かつ歴史あるこのホテルは、現在クリスマスの装飾と明かりできれいな外観だ。ホテル内に入っても豪華で美しい。構内を通過してすぐ近くにある中華料理のお店へと連れて行ってもらう。ここは庶民的で地元の人たちによく利用されるお店らしい。戸外式のこの店にはWai Honも以前のオフィスがこの近くにあったのでよく通ったとのこと。料理は３人で食べて適量で美味しくいただいた。Wai Honとは翌日また会う約束をして分かれた後、彼のお奨めに従い Orchard Road へとやってくる。ショッピングの中心地であるこの通りはクリスマスの装飾で溢れ、夜にもかかわらず人通りが多い。特に若者が。今日は一日中電車や駅で若者を多く見かけたが、どうも学校が休みに入ったようだ。

地下鉄を一駅分通りに沿って歩いて進み、クリスマス雰囲気を味わった所で宿へと帰る。

昨日と同じく夜行性になったが、色んなことができて面白い一日となった。

Day 71 – Singapore

We woke still feeling a bit tired this morning, and so it took us a while to get going. We ended up going to Harbour Front late morning, having some lunch there (Salmon Bento Lunchbox for me, Beef and vegetable rice bowl for Seio) and then heading off to the Jurong bird park. There were some really interesting birds at the park – so needless to say I was photographing everything that moved!! Unfortunately it is the monsoon season in Singapore right now, and in the early afternoon we got caught in a very nasty thunderstorm – I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a noisy thunderstorm! Here we were sitting under a shelter in the rainforest (lots of tall trees around us!), with extremely loud claps of thunder making us jump every now and then. Although it was quite scary, it was really interesting to see how the fish and the birds reacted to such fierce weather conditions – they were just going about their business as usual.

Even after nearly an hour, the rain and thunder continued, so we just decided to make a dash for the exit and jump on the next bus home.

Once back at the hotel, the rain had calmed down and it was just feeling humid again.

We got changed out of our wet clothes, grabbed a hot shower and got all togged up to go and meet Wai Hon oustide the City Hall MRT station. As usual we were a bit late, and made Wai Hon wait for us – sorry Wai Hon (^^);

Seio met Wai Hon in Japan when they were both travelling around Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima – that was about 10 years ago!

Wai Hon took us for a drink at the bar on the 70th, yes 70th, Floor of the Swissotel. It only took us about 10 seconds to reach the bar on the top floor – we went up so fast it made my ears pop!

The view from the top floor was amazing – we arrived just before sunset, and so we could enjoy the day view, sunset and night views whilst supping on our Cosmo’s and French Martinis…what a life heh?

After cocktails, we headed back down to earth (literally) and went off to see the Raffles Hotel. It really is an amazing hotel – and I’m sure well worth the money for those people who can afford such luxury.

After wondering what life would be like living it up at Raffles, Wai Hon took us to dinner at one of his regular haunts – an authentic, al fresco eatery serving the local delicacies. We had pork with ginger and spring onion, omelette with preserved radish, long beans with chilli and some white rice. Seio and Wai Hon tried some ‘Barley’ drink whilst I had an iced lemon tea.

After dinner it was getting quite late, and so we all headed to for the train station. Wai Hon suggested we take a look at the Xmas lights and atmosphere on Orchard Road, so after we said goodbye, Seio and I headed off to the shopping mecca road!

Although it was getting late and the shops were closed, there were so many young people out and about. The lights were amazing – it made the lights in Oxford Street look a little on the pathetic side! I don’t know how they manage to afford such extravagant decorations, but there were glitter balls hanging from the trees as well as luxurious fairy lights and giant Xmas sculptures of reindeer, Santa Claus and Ferrero Rocher Xmas trees!

We walked quite a way down before deciding to call it a night.

We are planning to hook up with Wai Hon again tomorrow …so looking forward to that already.

７０日目 Palm Cove/Cairns ～ Darwin ～ Singapore

１２月２日（水）晴れ

５泊滞在したPalm Coveを去る。シャトルバスで色んなホテルの客を拾って行きながら車内は満員に。こじんまりとしたPalm Coveだが、建設中の場所が多いことからリゾートホテルや別荘のアパートがさらに増える様子が伺える。

Cairns空港では、入国時と同じく入管のチェックは厳しくなく何も問われることなくスタンプだけ押して通過。X線検査では何も反応ないが、パソコンをリュックサックに入れようとする所またもや係員に背後から声をかけられる。日本人かと問われた後、数カ国語で書かれた説明書を渡される。そこには「あなたは定期的に行われる全身検査に無作為に選ばれました。ご協力お願いします」云々といったことが書いてある。係員は親切で低姿勢ではあるものの、またもや捕まってしまった。今回の旅で何度目だろうか。余程くじ運がいいのか怪しく見えるのか理由はいまだに定かではない。金属探知機で全身を探られた後すぐに解放されたので問題はないが。

Cairnsから次の目的地はSingaporeではあるが、飛行機はコードシェアのJet Star便で、Darwin経由となっている。２時間の飛行でDarwinに到着するや乗客は一旦ターミナルへと追い出される。１時間ほど待って同じ飛行機の同じ席に搭乗。Darwinで搭乗客が増えたらしく満席になっている。約５時間のフライトで飛行機が高度を下げて行く。到着が近づいたらしい。雲の下に出てると、眼下には島と海が広がり驚くほど多くの大小の船が海峡を行き交う光景が広がっている。貿易船に漁船が混じっているのだろうか、本当に船の数が多い。そういえば以前、東南アジアには海賊が多く出没するという話を聞いたこともある。海上航路は活発に違いない。

閑話休題。無事にSingaporeに着く頃には日も暮れて薄暗くなっている。トイレに行って戻って来るとライフル銃を持った３人の警官が警戒する様子で構内を歩いてゆく。いずれも小柄な男なので子供がおもちゃの銃を構えているように見えてしまう。

Singapore空港からはシャトルバスに乗ってホテルへと向かう。シンガポールでは英語が公用語の一つではあるが、中国をはじめインドや東南アジアなどそれぞれの国の言葉を日常的に使うらしく、それぞれ訛りが強い。出発直後、バスの運転手がマイクで何やら説明をしたが何を言っているのかはさっぱり分からなかった。

街中へとやって来るとクリスマス装飾の明かりがギラギラと輝いている。中心部の大きな通り沿いの並木にはひも状のライトのみならずミラーボールまでぶら下げてキラキラと輝いている。乗客はそれぞれ違う宿に泊るため、街中を観光するようにあっちに行ったりこっちに行ったりして回る。ようやく宿に着く頃には出発から１時間近くも経過していた。

滞在先の Hotel Re!は小高い公園の裏に位置するファンキーなデザインの宿である。色彩の奇抜さとは対照的に辺りはひっそりとした地域である。時刻は９時を過ぎているが、腹が空いたこともあり街の方へと下って行く。

宿を下って行くとそこはチャイナタウンの界隈。途中地下街のフードコートに行くも１０時を迎えほとんどが閉まりひっそりとしている。そのまま通過してClarke Quayへやって来るとこの辺りは人通りが多く賑わっている。飲食店も多くの客であふれている。北海道アイスクリームや居酒屋など日本の店が多いのに驚く。川沿いのシーフードレストランJumboというお店で夕食。炒飯は思ったより量が多かったが、マンゴーサラダとエビ団子のベーコン巻きは適量でいずれも美味しかった。

宿へと歩いて帰り休む。

Day 70 – Cairns / Darwin / Singapore

The shuttle bus picked us up on schedule at 10am and took us to Cairns airport. It’s interesting to see all the different airports and their locations. Cairns airport has ‘beware of the crocodile’ signs posted just as you enter the airport road! Luckily the signs disappear as you near the airport building!!

We checked in and went through immigration with no problems – Seio was once again double-checked after passing through X-ray screening. They seem to like Seio for some reason….I think he has been asked to ‘please step this way sir’ about 5 or so times during our rtw trip!!

The first leg of our journey to Singapore was a 2 hour flight to Darwin. We were asked to de-board the plane, only to have to re-board the same plane an hour later! Similarly to Fiji, we were dropped off right outside duty free….I’m sure they do that on purpose!!

The second leg of our journey was a little bit longer and took about 5 hours. As we flew over the harbor into SIngapore, we were amazed to see the amount of container ships in the port. I think Singapore is the second largest port in the world, after Rotterdam. Apparently they unload the cargo onto smaller boats and deliver them to shore that way….

After collecting our baggage from the reclaim carousel we hopped on a city shuttle bus with a number of other tourists and headed to our hotel – the Hotel Re! The journey was rather amusing, as no-one on the bus could understand what the driver was saying…we eventually figured out what he was trying hard to say…generally publicizing his company and telling us to retain our tickets if we wanted to use his bus on the return journey as it had his phone number on it!!

The Hotel Re! was a very interesting and fairly new boutique hotel…mostly bright pink or bright green in colour with funky designs of Elvis and Marilyn decorating the lift and room walls. Even the tiles in the shower room were bright pink and glittery (^.^)>

After checking in to the hotel we headed downtown through a traditional ‘Chinatown’ market area and onwards to Clarke Quay. It was buzzing with people, eating, drinking, and being merry! Seio and I had a quick walk around and decided to grab a bite to eat at a seafood restaurant called Jumbo seafood. The food was delicious – we had some fried rice with seafood, shrimp balls wrapped in smokey bacon with a  salad cream dressing, and a roast duck and mango salad. All very naughty but worth the guilt!!

After our feast, we headed back to base for some well-earned rest….

We have made arrangements to meet Seio’s friend, Wai Hon, for dinner tomorrow.
